THE PROGRAM "MOTHER - CHILD CENTRE IN KYIV"
Every year in Ukraine the problem of social orphanhood and parents' refusal of their newborn children becomes more urgent. Despite the fact that caring for the health of mother and child is one of the main national priorities, pregnant women and mothers with children find themselves in difficult life circumstances due to domestic violence, condemnation by family and friends, difficult financial situation. As a result, women are unable to provide proper care for newborns because they themselves need help.
To help such women, the Foundation Aspern in 2013 organized the Mother and Child Center program. The program is aimed at preventing social orphanhood and strengthening the family through the formation of responsible motherhood, the mother's commitment to the child, preventing the transfer of children to boarding schools. Under the program we provide pregnant women (7-9 months of pregnancy) and mothers with children from birth to 6 years, who found themselves in difficult life circumstances, with temporary housing and a range of social services. The grounds for enrollment in the program is being in difficult life circumstances, such as homelessness, domestic violence, difficult financial situation.
Enrollment in the Mother and Child Center is based on a woman's written application; referral of the Darnytsky Children's Service in Kyiv District State Administration, availability of an identity document and a medical certificate, and a child's birth certificate in case of enrollment of a woman with a child.
The center provides women with temporary accommodation, hard and soft equipment. Specialists of the Center carry out individual and group correctional work, provide psychological support and medical, legal, educational consultations. The Center also provides comprehensive prevention of problems in the psychological and social development of pregnant women and mothers with children. Specialists advise mothers on the development and upbringing of young children, assist in the registration of children in preschools and schools. There are also trainings aimed at developing the skills of independent living with a child. Women are helped to get an education and to get a job.
